Ellis has slim shot to play Sunday

IRVING -- Outside linebacker Greg Ellis is testing his repaired Achilles' tendon more this week, and there is a slight possibility he could play Sunday against St. Louis.

"It seems to be better now, and he seems to be more confident," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said.

Ellis worked with the scout team Wednesday, after doing that for the first time Friday. He said his foot held up pretty well from its most extensive work. Ellis had been limited to individual drills.

"I am going to see how much I can do," Ellis said. "That's the plan."

Ellis, who had surgery in November, has not played this season.

One more and he's out
After having two concussions in the first three games, running back Julius Jones said one more and he's out. But he's OK, right now. He didn't specify how long he would be out.

With the NFL paying closer attention to concussions, it might not take too much to force Jones to the sidelines.

"Every player that gets banged up, you are highly sensitive to," Wade Phillips said. "Our guys are monitoring it. [Team trainers] haven't told me there is a problem."

Newman improving
On the same day safety Keith Davis (shoulder) and linebacker Bobby Carpenter (knee) missed practice, defensive back Terence Newman was able to do a little bit more on his sore foot.
Although Wade Phillips said there is only an outside chance Newman would start Sunday, there is a good chance he will see more than the 20 plays he did against Chicago in nickel situations.

Working with Flozell
Since his professional career began in 1998, left tackle Flozell Adams has had trouble with false start penalties. It doesn't help that he is deaf in one ear.

In three games, Adams has five false start penalties. He had six last season.

Wade Phillips said the Cowboys have talked to Adams about the penalties and are working on it with hard snap counts.

Plan B for the Rams
St. Louis coach Scott Linehan reiterated Wednesday that starting running back Steven Jackson will not play because of a sore groin.

"He had over 2,300 yards of total offense a year ago. He was the guy that made us go, especially at the end of the year," Linehan said.

That puts Brian Leonard and Travis Minor into the first and second running back spots, respectively. They have combined for 25 yards on five carries this season.

Starting quarterback Marc Bulger will play despite two broken ribs.

Bruce guarantees win
Rams veteran receiver Isaac Bruce is making bold claims despite his team's 0-3 record. He guaranteed a victory against the Cowboys on a St. Louis radio station.
"I guarantee a win this week," Bruce said on his weekly radio show.
St. Louis didn't score a touchdown in last week's 24-3 loss to Tampa Bay. The Rams have scored only two offensive touchdowns this season.

Crayton's injury
Receiver Patrick Crayton had stitches removed from his dislocated right pinky finger.
