Giants at Cowboys: A look ahead

By CALVIN WATKINS
The Dallas Morning News

Why the Cowboys win
Despite injuries to two key linebackers and a starting cornerback, the Cowboys defense gets pressure on Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware is harder to stop in the Cowboys' tweaks of the 3-4 scheme. Quarterback Tony Romo is able to find Terrell Owens down field more often thanks to offensive coordinator Jason Garrett's scheme.

Why the Cowboys lose
Injuries to cornerback Terence Newman and outside linebacker Greg Ellis are too much for the defense to overcome. The Giants take advantage of a gimpy Newman and Jacques Reeves on passing downs. Eli Manning challenges the Cowboys' secondary with deep passes that exploit strong safety Roy Williams' inability to cover. The passing game runs into some difficulties with Terry Glenn not at 100 percent because of his recovery from knee surgery.

The last meeting
Cowboys 23, Giants 20, Dec. 3, 2006, Giants Stadium: The Cowboys won their fourth consecutive game when Martin Gramatica made a 46-yard field goal in the game's closing seconds. On the winning drive, quarterback Tony Romo found tight end Jason Witten for a 42-yard completion to set up Gramatica's kick. Gramatica, who was making his Cowboys debut after the team cut Mike Vanderjagt, made field goals of 41, 35 and 46 yards in the win. Romo passed for 257 yards but failed to throw a touchdown. He threw two interceptions. Marion Barber rushed 12 times for 76 yards and scored twice. Click here for the story on dallasnews.com.
