Giants' Manning, Jacobs, Umenyiora Injured in Loss to Cowboys

By Mason Levinson

Sept. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Three New York Giants starters were injured during last night's 45-35 season-opening loss to the Dallas Cowboys, including quarterback Eli Manning.

Manning bruised his throwing shoulder on a two-point try after throwing a fourth-quarter touchdown pass, while running back Brandon Jacobs and defensive end Osi Umenyiora suffered knee injuries, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.

Manning stayed in the game at Texas Stadium in Irving, and was removed after tossing a 10-yard score to Plaxico Burress -- Manning's fourth touchdown of the game -- with just over four minutes remaining.

``He came in and threw a touchdown pass, but after that we just felt like we needed to get him iced down so we could get that under control as soon as possible,'' Coughlin said at a his post-game news conference, which was televised by Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN.

Before his departure, Manning threw for 312 yards, with one interception on 28-of-41 passing. He was replaced by Jared Lorenzen, who was 1-for-3 passing for seven yards.

Jacobs, the Giants' starter following Tiki Barber's retirement from the National Football League, suffered a medial collateral ligament injury during the second quarter and didn't return to the game. He ran for 26 yards on six rushes, and was replaced by Derrick Ward, who had 89 yards on 13 carries.

Umenyiora injured his knee on the Giants' first defensive series. Coughlin said he didn't know the severity of the injuries.

``I'm sure they're going to have to be examined completely and thoroughly before any statement is made,'' he said.

Reserve Kevin Dockery also suffered an ankle injury during the loss.
