Coaching
The Dallas Cowboys of 2007 will go down in NFL history as one of the most talented, man for man, but underwhelming when it comes to coaching.
A team with raw muscle and individual skills but one without the killer instinct, without the swagger of a team coached by a Jimma or the Chin or Bob Stoops.
This is not an indictment against Wade.
Wade is a capable man, a defensive stalwart in the NFL who is too nice of a guy to keep complete command of the team through 16 games.
At the stretch, when the Cowboys are, say, 8-3, this team could stall, give in to the accolades or worse, believe they are destined when they still have lots to prove around the league.
Wade on a scale of 1 to 10 is a solid 5. Our QB coach doesn't know enough to stay away from performance enhancers, for chrissakes. Stewart on defense is an unknown factor as is Jason Garrett. Seems that his two top assistants will be learning the Dallas schemes on the job, and that is not good.
Defense
The Cowboys go into the regular season with some question marks at corner (if Newman's injury lingers) and a linebacking corps that is young and largely untested.
There are other questions marks: Spears, Canty and what some say are ploddingly slow safeties. Ware will be good to excellent and Spencer will be OK but not special right away.
The defense on a scale of 1 to 10, is a question mark, a work in progress, at a solid 6.
Offense
A rising star of a QB in Romo, two good but not great RBs, a superstar waiting to happen in Witten and an aging but still spectacular WR in T.O. Glenn will become an afterthough, an aging and injured star on the ascent. Crayton? Capable but nothing special.
The line, by all accounts, is solid and has two potential Pro Bowlers. Yet, it's largely one that has not played consistently as a unit.
The offense, on a scale of 1 to 10 is a remarkably potent 7, but only if T.O.'s hands improve and the line can protect Romo.
Special teams
McBriar is the class of this squad. After him there is little on which to pin high hopes.
Special teams, as good as McBriar is and will be, is still only a 5.
Without McBriar, a lowly 3 unless youngsters like Austin Miles and Stanback can contribute. Folk? Who knows how he will do. And if our offense is as potent as some say, his field goal skills won't be used that much, right?
Not a glowing endorsement for the Cowboys who can still go 9-7 or 10-6, depending on how well T.O. and the running game go.
Respectable, yes. A Super Bowl team or champ? Only if Seattle, Chicago, Philly and Carolina go belly-up and Indy and N.E. are abducted by space aliens.
Not our year, fellas. But many of you already know that.
All we can do is cheer them on this year and wait for those two No. 1s next year. And even then, those youngsters will have to spend a year or so learning before they contribute. The expected resurgence of this team definitely won't be quick.
