Forget hype, focus on 6-0

Owens "Due to the magnitude of this week's game and high volume of questions for the Original 81 about the other 81, I will be taking all questions immediately following Sunday's game."

That was the note I placed in my locker for all the reporters this week. I placed that note in my locker because I felt like there was nothing to be said, just play ball. I also did not want to give the media any reason to twist my words. Let's face it: This game has enough gasoline to fuel the fire.
Fortunately, for the readers of the Star-Telegram, you will be the second audience I talk to. I have a Miami radio show with Dan Le Batard, so I was obligated to speak Friday.
This week has been all about comparisons, like Randy Moss and myself, Romo and Brady, and the fact that we are two undefeated teams. We won't jump into the hype because that's what everyone wants us to do.
We already know they are a good team, but we are, too. Not many coaches in the NFL prepare their defense for an opposing offense better than Bill Belichick, but our defense is good also. The Patriots have a high-powered offense with Randy Moss, whom I said on my radio show was a great player. But we also have a high-powered offense with another great player. You know who I am talking about. This will certainly be the toughest challenge we have faced thus far this season.
According to all the experts, last week at Buffalo on Monday Night Football was supposed to be an easy one for us. Instead it was all we could handle. The game was ugly, but in the NFL all wins aren't pretty. That game was a perfect example of how a team wins as a unit. The whole team came together at the end when things weren't going our way early in the game. We had bad break after bad break, but we stayed alive. Despite taking hits, we just kept coming and we never quit. That's the mark of a team with heart.
The value of last week's game is that although we were down the first 59 minutes, we were able to come back and win in the last 60 seconds of the game. As I said after the game, our kicker Nick Folk kicked a 106-yard field goal. Well, you know what I mean. He came through in the clutch twice with two 53-yard field goals back-to-back.
Five-and-oh felt great, but 6-0 is where we want to be. That won't be easy, but we have confidence we can beat anybody. Although I wasn't too familiar with the Bills, I know the Patriots fairly well. After all, the last time I faced them was in the Super Bowl when I played for the Eagles.
Although we lost then, we played them tough to the last minute. The breaks didn't go our way that game, so to me the key to this game is getting off to a good start. It's no secret that we haven't dominated the first quarter this season, but, hey, it's better to take over in the second half than the first. We need to execute and play our best if we are going to beat a very good Patriots team.
We'll find out a lot this week about how we match up against a top AFC team. I am only making one guarantee: We WILL show up!
