An Unrestricted Free-Agent-To-Be...Keith Davis

(Richmond, VA) Dallas Cowboys safety Keith Davis said he wanted to wait until after the season to start looking into his contract situation. Davis was headed for New Orleans two years ago until the Cowboys matched the Saints' two-year offer sheet. Davis was a restricted free agent back then. As an unrestricted free-agent-to-be, Davis will be a hot commodity this
spring.

"I'd love to be here in Dallas. I'm a Cowboy fan," said Davis, the Cowboys special teams captain who grew up in Italy, Texas. "Just to play for them was a dream come true, first of all. I would love to be here, but I know it's a business at the end of the day and I've got to do whatever's best for me and my family."

Davis hasn't ruled out returning for a sixth season with the Dallas Cowboys, but he spoke on Monday like a player expecting to compete for a starting position in the NFL. While he has accepted his role as a top-notch special teams player, Davis wants the opportunity to prove he's more than that. Sure, he has started twenty-one (21) games with Dallas, but only at free safety. Davis is hoping he can find a team ready to make him its starting strong safety. That probably won't happen in Dallas, although with Pro-Bowler Roy Williams coming off a sub-par season at best, it might not be too much of a stretch to assume Davis could be competing for a starting position in Dallas.

If Davis hits the unrestricted-free-agent market in early March, it won't take long for him to achieve the level of financial security he both craves and should command as a starting dual (free/strong) safety and top-notch special teams' player. "You want to maximize your opportunity as a free-agent both professionally and financially," Davis said earlier in the week. "Football contracts are not guaranteed like baseball or basketball, so you've got to make the most while you can and do whatever's best for you and your family."

The end of the Keith Davis era in Dallas is rapidly approaching. Davis underwent minor surgery at seasons-end to repair his pectoral muscle injured in week 3 of the season, and will spend this off-season working on technique and getting stronger, so he can accept his role as a starting safety next season.
