Cowboys corral the week's buzz
by John Niyo
Everything's bigger in Texas.
And that's the way Cowboys owner Jerry Jones likes it. Yet even he probably had a little too much to digest the last couple weeks, after a bathroom brawl involving one of his most controversial players became the first in a series of troublesome headlines.
Adam "Pacman" Jones drew an indefinite suspension from the league for his latest stunt, while three key starters -- quarterback Tony Romo, cornerback Terence Newman and punter Mat McBriar -- are out with injuries. (Jones did say Friday that Romo "very likely" will be ready to play Sunday despite a broken finger on his throwing hand.)
And with the Cowboys stumbling on the field, losing two of their last three, the owner decided to pull the trigger on a big deal Tuesday for Lions receiver Roy Williams, giving up a package of draft picks.
"Just another week in Dallas with the Cowboys," coach Wade Phillips said. "We're used to it. It seems like there's always something going on."
The trade for Williams was more than just a welcome distraction, the team insists. Ownership has made no secret of its desire to find a complement to Terrell Owens at the receiver position. But the team paid a steep price, giving up a first- and third-round pick as part of the deal.
"You look at the history of high No. 1 picks, even high No. 1s have a hard time coming in right away and contributing," team president Stephen Jones said. "Here we've got a young player proven who should be able to come in and not only help us right away, but also be a guy who's going to be here for quite some time."
How will T.O. handle it, though? So far, the 34-year-old Owens is saying all the right things, even after Williams signed a reported $45 million contract extension that matches -- or exceeds -- what Owens is making. ("What about it?" Owens said.)
"Maybe he will be ecstatic if he gets more balls thrown to him," ex-Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman told the New York Post. "But if not, I can't see how he is going to be excited about the addition of another player that is going to want the football."
