Practice Highlights: Morning Session

Here are some highlights from the morning session:
*Quarterback Tony Romo and Roy Williams missed each other on a couple of early throws (one pass went behind Williams, and he seemed to stop on another one), but the two connected on a deep pass down the left sideline in 7-on-7 drills. Williams beat DB’s Mike Mickens and Pat Watkins on the play.
*The secondary was active yet again. Mickens responded by nearly intercepting a middle pass to Patrick Crayton. Cornerback Orlando Scandrick broke up a ball intended for Jason Witten and later intercepted Jon Kitna. Cornerback Terence Newman picked off rookie Stephen McGee deep in the offense’s own territory and returned it down the left sideline for a touchdown.
*Seventh-round receiver Manuel Johnson made a couple of nice catches, including a deep corner route over Scandrick. Williams told the media last week the rookie wideouts needed to pick it up without Sam Hurd and Miles Austin on the field.
*Alan Ball might not have ideal size at 185 pounds or so, but he seems to have good instincts at the safety position. He was active last week in OTA’s and swooped in to deflect another ball over the middle.
*Defensive end Jason Hatcher pressured McGee into throwing the ball away. Good pursuit by Hatcher in his first practice back. Aside from the pick to Newman, McGee did show some good elusiveness in the pocket.
