IRVING - While Cowboys coach Bill Parcells has been rather reserved with comments about receiver Terrell Owens to the local media, he at least acknowledged the obvious during a conference call with the Indianapolis media this week.
Asked how life has been with Owens this year, Parcells replied with "interesting."
When pushed to elaborate, Parcells said the organization decided to bring the player in and it was his job to make it work.
In attempting to do so, Parcells said he has gone out of his way to be patient, despite some trying incidents, while avoiding a "blow-up confrontation."
"There have been a few little things that, you know, I would say would kind of test that a little bit," Parcells said. "But overall I'm doing my best to try to make it work, and that's what I'm charged with doing. And it'd be easy just to go ahead and have a big blow-up confrontation like everybody thinks is coming or will come and just throw the hands up and say, 'well, I just can't do it.'
"But I'm at a point in time in my career where I really want to do things with the idea and the intent to try to make it work. And it's in everybody's interest if you can, so that's what I've been trying to do."
Asked if it has been worth it, Parcells said "it's a continuing process, but hopefully things will get better as we go."
Romo's No. 2
Sunday's game matches the league's top two passers in Indianapolis' Peyton Manning and Dallas' Tony Romo, respectively.
But that's where the similarities end, according to Bill Parcells. While he is pleased with Romo's better-than-expected play in his first three starts, Parcells has repeatedly said things are a little less than perfect.
He remains wary of Romo's tendency to make impulse plays. He said the upstart quarterback has gotten away with some things that will come back to bite him if he continues to play that style.
Davis to start
Keith Davis will start at free safety for the third consecutive game, though rookie Pat Watkins will see some action.
Bill Parcells said he will use both players because they bring different things to the table. Davis' ability to play the run makes him more like a strong safety. Watkins is the better pass defender, despite losing his starting job after six games because of his struggles in coverage.
