Record day for Cowboys' Romo

by CBS Sports:

Unheralded Tony Romo has the Dallas Cowboys riding high these days.

Making just his fifth NFL start, Romo tied a franchise record with five touchdown passes as the hometown Cowboys trounced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38-10 in front of 63,183 fans at Texas Stadium on Thursday.

It marked the ninth time that a Cowboys quarterback had thrown five TD passes, but the first time on American Thanksgiving.

"I got things I still have to work on and get better at," Romo said. "Believe me, I haven't arrived yet, by any means."

Romo engineered five TD drives in six possessions, settling for a 22-yard field goal from veteran placekicker Mike Vanderjagt of Oakville, Ont., on the sixth.

"I thought it was [Troy] Aikman out there," Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden said.

To put Romo's accomplishment in perspective, Aikman needed overtime to do it and Roger Staubach never did it.

And they're both Hall of Famers.

Romo spread the wealth too, hooking up with Terry Glenn on 30- and two-yard touchdowns, finding Marion Barber with TD strikes from one yard and two yards out, and tying the record on a seven-yard TD toss to Terrell Owens.

"The sky is the limit for the guy," Owens said. "He is poised back there in the pocket, he makes things happen on the run.

"He makes great decisions and he's managing the game. He's exceeding expectations, right now."

Dallas rolling under Romo

With the win, the Cowboys (7-4) improved to 4-1 since Romo replaced embattled veteran Drew Bledsoe as starting pivot, and now lead the New York Giants by a half-game atop the NFC East.

"We just got good talent out there on both sides of the ball," Romo said. "We are starting to come together, as a team, and I think it showed out there."

Romo so overwhelmed the Buccaneers defence that he completed 13 consecutive passes at one point and went 8-of-9 in the second half.

He finished 22-of-29 for 306 yards and, of course, five TDs.

"I'm impressed by the fact he didn't turn the ball over," Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said. "He's managing the game well and that's what he's supposed to do.

"He's a football guy and he's interested in playing well, but we've got a ways to go here. So put the anointing oil away OK?"

The Buccaneers (3-8) drove 80 yards on the opening drive of the contest, capping the march with a one-yard TD run by fullback Mike Alstott at 9:18 of the first quarter.

Matt Bryant's 46-yard field goal with 6:38 remaining in the first half accounted for Tampa Bay's other points.
