Recap by C_rob from a sports forum:
What has happened? We are spending greats amount of money for mediocrity? Teams have figured it out. They keep their players, and the guys that get let go get a lot of money thrown at them. You would think Clements was the greatest CB in history with his contract.
Leonard Davis? Last year Steve Hutchison gets the same amount of money as Davis got this year. Had he come out this year he would have had $60-70 million. Davis has been an underacheiver. I know a few guys in the NFL that have asked what can we do to motivate Davis? If he plays like the 2nd round pick in the draft that he was it could be a great pickup for the Cowboys.
I admire and respect Brad Johnson as a player. He has worked very hard just to get on the football field and just as hard to stay there. If Tony Romo doesn't succeed as a QB it won't be because he doesn't have smart guys around him.
I think Garrett is going to be a GREAT coach in the NFL. They are giving Romo every chance to succeed. Brad Johnson will see things on the field that Romo doesn't see, and be very helpful to him.
The Bears give away Thomas Jones to move up 20 spots. Niether Jones or Benson were very happy with the situation. This allows the Bears to move up into the high 2nd, possibly take another RB there.
The good football people can fix their problems, I guarantee you the Bears will have another RB option going into the season.
Surprises in FA so far? Just the money. A lot of guys that haven't even been to the pro bowl are busting the bank. The Clements thing really stands out. $80 million. A lot of the writers don't know the draft so they zero in on FA. Beat writers know who Eric Steinbach is. If I am running a team I don't want to sign a lot of these guys, I would rather take my chance in the draft.
Teams have been able to get players in April and May and get better value and better players if you stay patient. You could sign 5-6 guys and hope to hit on 1-2 of them. Right now there is just too much money out there. A lot of teams went out of their way to re-sign a lot of their own guys before FA started just to get their cap # lower so they don't go into FA with $30 million, because that gives the agents too much leverage to get a higher contract.
The trades are happening more. Teams are thinking they can get magic in a bottle and make a 1-2 year run. This is why Dre Bly, Thomas Jones and guys like that can be traded where in years past that would never happen.
Steroids in football? Football seems to get a little bit of a pass in the steroid allegations. A lot of guys in the NFL that may use steroids aren't the stat guys. They are the OL, DL, and LB, that don't get a stat line other than sacks. Unlike Bonds who is chasing MLB records.
In the NFC anyone can win it. I want to see Romo for a full season. I think the Cowboys are still a year away, but the NFC is so weak you never know.
Pac Man Jones: I don't think he plays for the Titans again. Thurman won't play for the Bengals. Teams know about a guys history, but are still willing to take a chance. This is a bad year if you are a college player with an issue or two, there will probably be a few guys sliding because of character in the coming draft.
