DMN: Cowboy blog: The other draft

The other draft

Right now the Cowboys have 10 draft picks. They could end up with a few more or a few less depending on the team's desire to make a trade or trades Saturday and Sunday. But there's another part of the draft weekend that gets overlooked: undrafted free agency.

The Cowboys have done an excellent job in recent years of getting who they want when it comes to the undrafted players. They stay in contact with them throughout the draft, and Jerry Jones is not afraid to throw some bonus money to get them.

The best pick has to be Tony Romo in 2003. He was offered more money by other teams but the Cowboys represented the best chance. He took it and the rest is history. In 2004 they got linebacker Ryan Fowler, who signed this off-season with Tennessee, and receiver Terrance Copper, a standout special teamer who is now in New Orleans. In 2005, Tyson Thompson decided to sign with the home team. Last year the Cowboys got receivers Miles Austin and Sam Hurd to come on board, beating out Copper, and the club believes both have big futures. Add fullback Oliver Hoyte, defensive end Stephen Bown and cornerback Quincy Butler to that list too.
