Spencer for hire, and just in time

The Dallas Cowboys ' top draft pick, ex-Purdue defensive end Anthony Spencer, is now officially in the saddle. On Thursday, the 6-foot-3, 265-pounder signed a five-year deal for $9 million -- and none too soon, as far as coach Wade Phillips is concerned.
Spencer will be moved to outside linebacker and was expected to back up veteran Greg Ellis. But Ellis had to leave Thursday's practice because of leg pain -- a concern, considering his 2006 campaign ended prematurely with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
This turn of events should give Spencer a lot of reps for awhile opposite DeMarcus Ware.
Commentary: Spencer should fit right into the Cowboys' attacking defense, and his presence will take some heat off Ware.
Fantasy Impact: : Before Spencer signed, the pain experienced by Ellis might have scared off a few fantasy players from drafting the Dallas defense. Keep an eye on Spencer early in the preseason.
