DMN Blog: Romo's the anti-Eli
LOUIS DeLUCA / DMN
Tony Romo and Eli Manning have a few things in common. They're starting quarterbacks for NFC East teams who have had alcohol-aided singing performances become YouTube hits. Other than that, they're polar opposites.
Eli is the bratty baby of a royal football family. He whined his way into the league with the genius move of refusing to play for a San Diego team that drafted him first overall and already had LaDainian Tomlinson. Only hardcore fans had even heard of Romo before he replaced Drew Bledsoe in the second half of a Monday night game against the Giants last year. He was just happy to get a shot in the NFL after going undrafted. Advantage: Romo.
Eli's coaches and teammates are pleasantly surprised that he showed a pulse by responding to ex-teammate Tiki Barber's nationally televised slams on his "comical" leadership abilities. Romo's teammates have raved about his moxie and rallied around him from the second he stepped into the huddle. Advantage: Romo.
Eli is engaged to Abby McGrew, his college sweetheart. Romo plays kissyface with Carrie Underwood. Advantage: Romo.
Giants fans wonder whether Eli, who has the talent to be a franchise QB, has the intangibles to ever fulfill his potential. Cowboys fans wonder whether Romo, who has the intangibles to be a franchise QB, really is as talented as he looked in his unbelievable first six starts. Advantage: Even.
