Jones compares stadium to Rome's Colosseum
A liberal dose
September 21, 2007
DALLAS -- Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Thursday that his new stadium would be as famous a structure as the Rome Colosseum, the White House and the Capitol building.
He spoke at the North Texas Commission's annual membership meeting at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. He also emphasized again that area leaders need to work together to get the word out about the stadium and the 2011 Super Bowl so that the media begin talking about North Texas and the Super Bowl years before it happens.
He said the team hasn't decided on naming rights for the new stadium. He also didn't know how much personal seat licenses will cost. Fans can buy the licenses, which give them first rights to purchase season tickets.
Here's what Jones said at the meeting:
'It happens to be the biggest stadium on Planet Earth. This is the Colosseum of Rome in sports. Size does have something to do with it. This building, it does have the opportunity to be, I guess, next to the White House or the Capitol. ... It does have the ability to be the most visible, visible building that anybody is going to see over the next 20 and 30 and 40 years.'
'The more we're involved as a community, the more we're involved in North Texas, the better we can make it. We have the opportunity; we're on center stage. The more we can use this tool and leverage it into success and visibility, the more we can make a team thing out of it in our region ... then we are maximizing what the Super Bowl can mean.'
'The one thing that you can't take away from competition or sports or association with it is the emotion that is involved in it. I've sold everything. I've sold shoes, I've sold insurance, I've sold a lot of things. Believe me, you've got to manufacture some emotion to get people really wanting to get involved. We don't have to manufacture anything. We're North Texas.'
'This stadium is not only going to be featured as part of the Super Bowl. It will remain that and have outstanding events that everybody in this room and everyone in your communities will benefit from for the next generations to come.'
'You've got to run with the ball. You've got to get in there and make the most of it. We've got a chance to bring value to this area that really is immeasurable.'
