DMN Blog: Romo, T.O. made Garrett look like gutsy genius
Rookie offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has rightfully been lavished with praise for his play-calling. His calculated aggressiveness is a major reason the Cowboys lead the league in scoring (41 ppg).
A bunch of highlight show analysts gave Garrett props for going for the kill against the Dolphins. Man, it took guts to go deep to T.O. on fourth down.
But Garrett didn't call the route that resulted in T.O.'s touchdown. The play was designed for T.O. to run a chain-moving, intermediate crossing route. What unfolded was pure improv by Tony Romo and T.O.
Romo saw the Miami cornerback sitting on the crossing route with no safety over the top and lofted the ball downfield, trusting T.O. to make the same read and the same instinctive adjustment. Next thing you knew, T.O. was mocking Spygate behind the goal post.
"It was just that communication and that chemistry that you guys have been talking about between me and Tony," T.O. said. "That was just a taste and a touch of what can go on throughout the season."
