Newman doubtful, Ellis out vs. Miami
Newman doubtful, Ellis out vs. Miami
A liberal dose
September 15, 2007
The Cowboys' already beleaguered defense is unlikely to get any help from injured linebacker Greg Ellis or cornerback Terence Newman against Miami.
Ellis (Achilles' tendon) has been ruled out of Sunday's game.
And while Newman (partially torn plantar fascia in his right heel) is considered a game-time decision, it doesn't look good for him, either.
Newman acknowledges his progress in being able to participate in parts of practice in the past three days.
But he says he still has pain in his foot and is not close to being 100 percent.
'It's probably going to be that way for a while,' Newman said. 'We don't know how it's going to feel from week to week, day to day. I'll warm up before the game to see how it feels. If it feels good enough, I'll go.'
Newman is hesitant to take a pain killer to numb the injury out of fear it might make the situation worse.
'I'm not going to put myself out there if I can't play,' he said. 'Nickel, dime, base, whatever -- it doesn't matter. I'm not going to play if I'm not ready. I don't want to come back until I am well enough to play without injuring myself further.'
Newman played in 64 straight games since joining the Cowboys in 2003 before sitting out the season opener against the New York Giants.
He had a bad experience playing injured in 2004 and doesn't want a replay of that. He also said he wants to get the injury problems behind him and play the bulk of the season healthy rather than let it linger and be limited in the crucial months of November and December.
Jacques Reeves will make his second consecutive start at left cornerback if Newman is unable to play.
Coach Wade Phillips said Ellis has shown progress by participating in individual drills in practice this week. Ellis acknowledged he is not where he needs to be in order to play against Miami. He will be re-evaluated next week.
Ellis has been sidelined since suffering a torn left Achilles' last November. He tried to return to practice in training camp, but suffered bursitis in his right heel July 25 and did not practice again until doing some individual work Wednesday and Thursday. Rookie Anthony Spencer started in his place against the Giants and will do so Sunday.
