DeMarcus Ware = RFA

CLASS OF 2005 NEEDS TO WAKE UP
Posted by Mike Florio on May 21, 2008, 1:17 p.m.

Last night, we listed some of the 2006 draft picks who won’t be free agents in 2010, if there’s no salary cap. The guys who won’t be free agents when they otherwise would have been free agents include Maurice Jones-Drew and Devin Hester.

But now that it’s clear that six years of service will be needed in order to hit the market, the net also will be big enough to capture the class of 2005. And that includes non-first-round busts like Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown, Browns receiver Braylon Edwards, Cowboys linebacker Demarcus Ware, Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman, Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell, Seahawks center Chris Spencer, Falcons receiver Roddy White, Chargers defensive tackle Luis Castillo, Colts cornerback Marlin Jackson, and Steelers tight end Heath Miller.

(We’ve omitted Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson not because we think he’s a bad player, but because he already has signed a long-term deal, which puts him under contract through 2013.)

So the message to these and every other player who won’t be an unrestricted free agent in 2010 absent a new CBA is to start making phone calls now in an effort to pressure the union to get a deal done. The folks who tend to complain the most in situations like this are those whose ox is about to be gored — and the would-be free-agent class of 2010 will feature a field of bloody oxes. Or oxen. Or bulls without balls.
