DMN Blog: Burnett talks about players contracts

by Kevin Burnett

A lot of you have commented on players honoring their contracts. I want to say I totally agree in the fact that you signed it now "PLAY/ PAY". Let's consider when a player under performs his contract and the team wants the player to take a pay cut. When the owner/ GM comes to him and asks him to take a pay on a contract that the owner signed, how does that go unnoted? As soon as this player fails to negotiate on a lower pay scale he called selfish and or released. The fly in the ointment is when a player out performs his deal. When a player is above his pay scale and asks for more money, he's out of line. Being one of the best at what he does, and is not being paid rightfully so is put him in a position to talk $. What do you expect him to do?

As I said before if you signed it you should Honor It. Should a club be allowed to release a player who is under contract? Should there be a buyout system instead of being released and not being paid (NFL coaches have a buyout option)? Just as player is held accountable for playing out his contract should a ball club be held accountable to own up to the contract as well? NFL contracts are not 100% money in the bank. I'm not sure but I think every other major sport is guaranteed money.

Rookie Pool

In the NFL rookies are paid on a sliding scale, which I'm sure all of you are aware of. You also have money in what is called the rookie pool. This is money allotted to the position in which the player was drafted. The reason rookies are coming in on the high side of the mountain due to the rookie pool numbers being higher (new CBA). For a rookie to not get at least what is allotted in the rookie pool would be crazy. The new CBA allowed these numbers to sky rocket hopefully this next one (CBA) offers guaranteed contracts.
