DMN Blog: Live from Oxnard VI: Another beautiful day in sunny So. Cal

by Tim MacMahon

Weather: 71 degress and not a cloud in sight.

Shorts and shoulder pads this afternoon. CB Terence Newman (groin), CB Quincy Butler (hamstring), LB Tearrius George (knee) and LB Justin Rogers (virus/dehydration) won't practice.

To read about the guys who are on the field, follow the jump and refresh like jackrabbits ...

5:29 -- Wade Phillips just finished his press conference. ... Gushed about Leonard "Bigg" Davis' dominant performance this morning. "He looked like the Leonard Davis we saw last year," he said. ... Called Tank Johnson a leader who guys rally around. ... Likes what he's seen from CB Alan Ball, who has beefed up from 168 to 186 pounds since getting drafted in the 2007 seventh round. ... Said Sam Hurd and Miles Austin are neck and neck for No. 3 WR gig.

5:42 -- Experiencing some technical difficulties, but you haven't missed anything interesting. Just warm-up position drills. ... Forgive me if I'm distracted. Lovable loudmouth Steve Dennis is flapping his gums in the ESPN Radio about 15 feet to my left. ... No Jessica Simpson sightings yet.

5:45 -- Their primary nickel and dime packages feature four down linemen: DE DeMarcus Ware, DT Chris Canty, DT Jay Ratliff, DE Greg Ellis ... Crowd is hollering at T.O., but I'm not quite sure why. I've relocated to the media tent for three reasons: 1) Get away from Steve Dennis, 2) stronger Internet connection, 3) overwhelming heat. (Just kidding about the last one. Just wanted to perturb folks sweating in 104-degree Dallas.)

5:50 -- Don't worry. I'll head to the field once the competitive juices start flowing and come back to report the highlights. ... Matt Mosley wants to me to tell his former audience hello. He's toiling at a Disney production now.

5:52 -- By the way, T.O. shared a warm embrace with Michael Irvin after this morning's practice. Never did see him have any interaction with Keyshawn Johnson the other day. ... Still position drills.

5:55 -- Oh, by the way, Wade announced a schedule change. They'll practice twice Saturday. Should be a fun day. They're gonna work on short-yardage, goal line, red zone and two-minute drills.

6:01 -- Still nothing interesting. ... Wade gushed about Patrick Watkins being a special teams star today. Pointed out that Watkins, not departed Keith Davis, led the Cowboys in special teams tackles last season. ... S Dowayne Davis reminds Wade of Keith Davis (no relation). If he makes the team, D. Davis could be a special teams stud. ... Headed to the field. Be back in a bit.

6:16 -- First, stuff from pass-rush 1-on-1s. ... DeMarcus Ware turned the corner on Flozell Adams, blowing by the Pro Bowl LT. Archer mentioned this yesterday, but it's amazing that a 6-4, 262-pound dude can be so explosive and stay so low while changing directions. ... NT/DE Jay Ratliff continues his star run in Oxnard. He whupped Pro Bowl C Andre Gurode and then moved outside and made backup RT Pat McQuistan look bad. ... DE Chris Canty had a pretty swim move to beat backup LT Doug Free inside. ... NT Tank Johnson got good penetration by getting under Pro Bowl RG Leonard "Bigg" Davis' pads. Gurode stood up Tank on another play. ... Sixth-round OLB Erik Walden got manhandled by Free. Second-round TE Martellus Bennett put Walden on the ground one play, but Walden got a good bull-rush on Bennett the next snap.

6:20 -- Now stuff from 7-on-7 ... CB Adam "Pacman" Jones is holding his own against T.O. today after the Original 81 torched him yesterday. Pacman had a pretty PBU on a go route to T.O. ... Isaiah Stanback pushed off on Pacman on another go route, but the second-year WR couldn't make the catch after getting both hands on the ball. ... More good work from Sam Hurd and Miles Austin. Hurd catch a ball about 20 yards down field in the middle in front of Roy Williams. Miles Austin beat Evan Oglesby on a deep crossing route. ... Good session for the linebackers. There were a lot of balls in the flat, and Bradie James, Zach Thomas, Greg Ellis and Co. were consistently in position to make tackles for short gains.

6:27 -- Nick Folk is kicking field goals on the field away from the stands. Rowdy is kicking field goals on the near field. Guess which one the crowd is more excited about? "ROWDY! ROWDY! ROWDY!"

6:30 -- More 11-on-11. Be back in a bit.
