Austin's Sprained Knee Getting Stronger

Cowboys receiver Miles Austin says his sprained right knee is considerably stronger than it was when he suffered the injury 10 days ago. Still, he doesn't want to place a specific timetable on his return.

"I don't want to be out there running and thinking about it," he said Tuesday. "I'm going to wait until it's good. I'm not going to be out there before it starts feeling good."

The Cowboys initially projected a 4-6 week recovery, which means Austin could miss at least the next three weeks (or at least the first two regular-season games).

He'll also have to get back to football shape once he starts running. But Austin said his diligent rehab work with the Cowboys' trainers is "as close as it gets" to real practice.

With Austin and Isaiah Stanback (shoulder) sidelined, this is a big week for the Cowboys' "down the line" receivers, as Wade Phillips put it today. Danny Amendola and Mike Jefferson aren't just competing against each other for a roster spot. The other 31 teams will provide plenty of waiver wire options for the Cowboys come Saturday.
