We spoke live with new Cowboys backup quarterback Jon Kitna last night on Tylock Lasik SportsTalk (6:30PM, channel 52, Monday-Friday). He was very clearly thrilled to be coming to Dallas, and expressed excitement over next season.
I asked Kitna point-blank if the Cowboys' locker room chemistry issues gave him any hesitation, when he found out he had been traded. He said not at all, and that every NFL team has it's issues on the inside. He also said Tony Romo is a top quarterback and he has complete confidence in him to rebound next season. He reiterated his desire to not play a down next season, meaning Romo would be healthy all year. But Kitna did admit that in this day and age of injuries to quarterbacks, there's a good chance he would be called upon at some point.
Kitna was also unwavering in his support for wide receiver Roy Williams, whom Kitna played with in Detroit for 2+ seasons. Kitna said Roy was "dealing with some things" during the trade last season, trying to fit in with his new club. He then proclaimed Roy as one of the top young stars in the NFL and had no fears that he would be able to have an outstanding 2009 in Dallas.
What came through during the interview is that Kitna is very thoughtful about his future and realizes he's in a good position now. He measured his words very carefully and spoke at length on each topic. I get the sense he's relieved to finally be out of Detroit.
