All you need to know about the Dallas Cowboys is that Jerry Jones had yet to have his first facelift way back in 1996 when the team last had a winning December record.Last year’s 1-3 December mail-in was pretty much typical of the way this group has played when the weather cools and games mean most.

Will 2009 be any different for the team with 11-5 talent and an 8-8 heart? Maybe not, but some things will at least be different. Gone are Terrell Owens and Jessica Simpson and the sideshows they created, and safety Roy Williams has also departed, cutting by 50 percent the number of Roy Williamses on the roster. DL starter Chris Canty was allowed to walk.

What’s left is basically the same group that spit the bit last December, losing three of four and bowing out of the playoff race. It would help a lot if Tony Romo could take better care of the football – he averages close to two turnovers a game.

Romo has some tools to work with – the offensive line is OK, his BFF tight end Jason Witten is back, and RB Felix Jones returns from injury to make things easier on Marion Barber’s legs.

They should move the ball as long as Romo doesn’t feel he doesn’t have to channel a 28-year-old Brett Favre every weekend.

Any chance of a serious playoff run is out of the question if the Boys can’t figure out what to do with a defense that last season gave up 69 more points than any other team in the NFC East. DeMarcus Ware led the team which led the league with 59 sacks, but it was fool’s gold.

Igor Olshansky replaces Canty on the D-line, but linebackers (except Ware) and secondary are ordinary.

Surprising stat: Head coach Wade Phillips starts his third year in Dallas and 8th year as a head coach. His teams have 70 regular season victories and exactly zero playoff wins.

Team strengths: In a best-case scenario the return of Jones should bolster the running game. That may not be sexy enough for the fans, but a dominant running game would keep a suspect defense off the field and give Romo fewer chances to screw up.

Team Weakness: Forget Xs and Os for a bit. This team just needs to suck it up and start winning tough games. In their biggest game of the year in 2008, the Cowboys lost to Philly, 44-6.
