Dallas Cowboys.com says Dat demoted?
Has a team's co-captain and key player ever returned to action after a significant absence with less fanfare than the Cowboys' little fireball of a middle linebacker? Has there ever been a player who cared less if anyone noticed him? There are two main reasons Nguyen's return, as a spare part, last Sunday against Arizona scarcely got a mention. Well, three, if you count the fact the team was winning big.Nguyen's anonymous resurfacing can be attributed to: a) The fact that in his three week absence, the defense played exceptionally well. It's not that he wasn't missed, but Julie Armchair and Joe Barstool couldn't tell you how. And b), when he came back against the Cardinals, it was not in his old starting role at inside linebacker. It was as a relief pitcher, mostly in dime defenses against four wide receivers, with a smattering in nickel and the regular sets to give Bradie James a breather. What it's unlikely anyone will say out loud is that this is probably Dat Nguyen's role now. What Nguyen will say eagerly is that that is fine with him.
