“We’ve Got a Ways to Go”

By Rafael Vela

Wade Phillips summarized his first practice with the Cowboy as “ragged” at times but good. He led off the 23 minute discourse with the 62 assembled press members with a brief summary of Terrell Owens’ day.

The rehabbing WR surprised the team by taking part in both practices.
Phillips said the team has spoken with Owens’ doctor, who green lighted practice. Owens showed sure hands, catching everything thrown his way.
Other notes:

– Phillips said he was pleased with the 98% attendace at offseason workouts.
– He said his pass rush was strong today. The players did not work out in pads, so Phillips had to be referring to his front seven’s recognition and speed.
– Julius Jones was one of the workout no-shows, preferring to train in Arizona. (He is at the mini-camp.) Phillips said the team would emphasize screens, draws and stretch plays for Jones, as those are plays he runs well, but “he’ll have to make other runs too.”
– Tony Romo had a strong workout and appeared comfortable with his reads and options. “[Romo] sets up quicker than most QBs” said Phillips, allowing himself more time to scan the field and find the proper receiver.
Phillips expressed confidence in Romo, saying his season ending fumble came as a holder, not as a QB and “the holder Romo we got rid of…”
– Phillips claimed confidence in new OC Jason Garrett, who had a command of the playbook and knows what he wants.
– LBs Kevin Burnett and Bobby Carpenter worked at backup ILB positions today, though Carpenter also got a lot of reps at OLB. Phillips remaked that both were athletic and offered complements to starters Akin Ayodele and Bradie James, who “know what to do.”
– Phillips said Demarcus Ware would rush more than covering in his system, since rushing is Ware’s strength.
– When asked his opinion on players who claimed their production was hampered by the schemes they played in, Phillips mischievously answered, “sometimes they’re right,” before dropping back and saying he was speaking in a generic sense. Uh-huh.
