DMN Blog: Mr. Fix-It's mess

It's really not fair to evaluate Wade Phillips' defensive wizardry with Terence Newman, Greg Ellis and Jason Ferguson on the sideline, but those are the cards he's been dealt.

Newman and Ellis might be able to play in Miami, but there's no way they'll be full speed. They might not be 100 percent the rest of the season. Ferguson won't play again until 2008.

A pessimist would think that Cowboys opponents will rack up points all season, as the Giants did Sunday night. An optimist would think that this is just an opportunity for Phillips to show his 3-4 genius.

Superstar columnist Tim Cowlishaw notes that Chicago overcame major injuries to have a defense so dominant it carried a Rex Grossman-quarterbacked team to the Super Bowl.

But Phillips must feel like a guy who bought a fixer-upper only to have the pipes burst and foundation crack.
