DMN Blog: Urlacher used to seeing elite TEs
Chicago MLB Brian Urlacher paid Jason Witten a huge compliment today by saying he's in the class of the two starting tight ends the Bears have faced this season: San Diego's Antonio Gates and Kansas City's Tony Gonzalez.
"He's more like a receiver when he's running routes," Urlacher said of Witten. "He's a good blocker also. But running routes, he's fast; he's a big guy; he gets open."
Urlacher won't be in man coverage against Witten much, if at all. The Tampa 2 scheme the Bears play requires Urlacher to patrol the middle in pass coverage, sometimes as deep as 30 yards.
Witten said Urlacher moves and reacts like a 260-pound free safety, which happens to be the position Urlacher played at New Mexico. The Cowboys might try to attack the Bears with Witten on seam routes, but that's risking a huge collision with a perennial Pro Bowler who has a full head of steam.
Gates hurt the Bears with nine catches for 107 yards and a TD. Gonzalez wasn't much of a factor, catching four passes for 43 yards.
