LB Burnett '50-50' on playing in opener

IRVING -- Linebacker Kevin Burnett said he has been cleared to play Sunday against the New York Giants. Whether he will depends on how his foot feels.

Along with injured linebacker Greg Ellis (tendon/heel), Burnett spent Wednesday working with the trainer on rehabbing his foot.

"I'd say it's 50-50 right now," said Burnett, who had bone chips removed from his foot.
Burnett is expected to practice today.

Burnett twice had surgery on his knee as a rookie. The second surgery slowed him a bit last season.

"My frustration level is very high," Burnett said. "Coming in after my rookie year and playing pretty good. Then this year coming back, having no injuries and now this. It happens."

Ellis isn't expected back by Sunday. Some of his teammates are prepared to play at least half the season without him.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, "He's got to get where he can raise his heel."

Practice matters
Cornerback Terence Newman did not practice with the team Wednesday. Although most of his teammates, and Giants coach Tom Coughlin, still believe Newman will play Sunday, nothing is certain.

Jerry Jones, however, is optimistic. Newman might be able to practice some today.
"I know his intent is to do everything he can to play," Jones said.

"Hopefully, maybe even get him the actual team work [today]."

Ailing receiver Terry Glenn (knee) practiced.

Romo on Wade Wilson
The person who figures to be directly affected most by the five-game suspension of Cowboys quarterback coach Wade Wilson is Tony Romo.

Romo said he didn't hear of any possible punishment until the league announced that Wilson was suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Wilson said he took the banned substance to counter the effects of diabetes.

"I've heard from Wade's side of it, I can understand," Romo said. "But it's a thing with the NFL, that's what they're harping on right now. If you get in trouble right now, they're going to come down hard on you."

Parcells' move
Jerry Jones said he had no problem with the recent report that former coach Bill Parcells was trying to land the Giants' general manager position before the Cowboys' game in New York in December.

Some of the players weren't too happy with it, but as specified in his contract, Parcells was allowed to leave the Cowboys without penalty for a general manager's position.

"He basically could have been just making sure at the time, but I don't question his focus and his intensity for that game," Jones said.

"That didn't happen."

Jones defends move
While some Cowboys players were upset at the release of veteran defensive back Aaron Glenn, Jerry Jones defended the move during a news conference Wednesday.

"Sometimes being in the right spot is not enough. You'd like to have some people that cause something to happen," Jones said.

"It wasn't easy, but I think it was in the best interest of us winning, and winning right now."
Glenn has since signed with theJacksonville Jaguars.
