DENVER, Colorado — The Broncos are preparing for the circus that is the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys and Broncos will hold joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday, then play an exhibition game Saturday at Invesco Field at Mile High. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan looks forward to evaluating his team against a Cowboys team many expect to represent the NFC in XLIII.

"It's always good to go against somebody new," Shanahan said after Tuesday morning's practice. "They've got a little different style of running attack than we do. There are a lot of similarities in the passing game. But still, they have a little different philosophy so it'll be good work for our defense and our offense."

The practices against Dallas are closed to the public. Teams will dress in pads, but no tackling will take place. "We've got pretty smart football teams on both sides, a lot of competition. At the same time you're trying to protect each other . . . cooler heads always prevail. We were able to do that (last year) and I'm sure we'll be able to do it this time."

Shanahan expects the Broncos will be motivated by the challenge of matching up against the Cowboys during the week.

"Our football team is pretty smart," Shanahan said. "I told you last year when we practiced against them that I thought they were a Super Bowl team -- and people laughed. I don't think people are laughing any more because they saw the type of talent they displayed last season. We're going against a very, obviously, talented team -- a lot of Pro Bowl players out there. It'll be a good test for our football team."

Etc.: Defensive starters Champ Bailey (hamstring), Boss Bailey (ankle) and Hamza Abdullah (groin) missed the morning practice session . . . Denver signed free agent cornerback Wale Dada and released cornerback Lamont Reid. Dada has spent time on the rosters of the New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints.
