DMN Blog: If the Cowboys draft a backup QB, who should it be?
by Brian Davis
Tim Tebow is headed back to Florida, and I'm sure there will be plenty of folks ready to comfort him after having successful shoulder surgery. So Tebow won't be among the quarterbacks in the 2009 draft class. But there will be plenty others. And that got me thinking, if the Cowboys draft a backup quarterback to conceivably push Tony Romo, who should it be?
Matt Stafford will be long gone by the third and fourth rounds. Let's say Sam Bradford does come out; he'd be gone, too. I can't see the Cowboys taking Colt McCoy. I'm not convinced he'll be a good pro. (He's testing the NFL waters but will probably be back in Austin in `09.) Same goes for Graham Harrell. There's too much history with past Texas Tech QBs flaming out, be it the system, their individual talent or whatever.
So who does that leave?
Alabama's John Parker Wilson is intriguing. Arizona State's Rudy Carpenter should be ready for his NFL closeup after fans tried to run him out of Tempe after every interception. Fresno State's Tim Brandstater completed almost 60 percent of his passes this season, but he was just average throughout his career.
Here's two names I'm interested in, even if they don't land with the Cowboys - Missouri's Chase Daniel of Southlake and Sam Houston's Rhett Bomar of Grand Prairie. Anybody want to take a chance on those guys with a fifth- or sixth-round pick?
